Site Performance and Self-Driving Commerce

Site Performance and Self-Driving Commerce

Online retailers spend all year getting ready for the deluge of traffic they face during the holiday season. This year, Cyber Monday marked the single largest online sales day ever in the U.S. – handily beating last year’s record by 12 percent – so the industry deserves a collective pat on the back for managing that torrent of traffic without any major issues.

But the truth is, there’s still a lot of work to be done. A study that looked at performance of the web’s 100 largest retailers on Cyber Monday found that half of them had load times that took 20 seconds or more. With performance like that, it’s a little surprising that Cyber Monday was as successful as it was for large retailers, especially when you consider shoppers’ short attention spans. Past research by Akamai and Forrester found that consumers expect e-commerce sites to load in two seconds or less, and 40 percent of people will abandon a site after three seconds of load time.

“…Self-Driving Commerce is becoming a reality so retailers can pull back on the time and resources they spend managing infrastructure, and devote more time to what they do best.”

Internet and website traffic is only going to grow, so keeping site infrastructure up to the challenge will be a continuous endeavor. But there’s good news – self-driving commerce is becoming a reality so retailers can pull back on the time and resources they spend managing infrastructure, and devote more time to what they do best. The art of retail hasn’t been lost, but with technology and the e-commerce industry moving at breakneck speeds, it sometimes takes a back seat. Twenty years after the dawn of eCommerce, innovation in the industry is still a regular occurrence. But overall, retailers are starting to get on more solid footing when it comes to their technology. As they realize the potential of self-driving commerce, the art of retail can once again become their number one priority.
